The Courage to Look at Yourself

Courage to Look withinSee Full Size

We don’t look at ourselves because we’re afraid of what we’ll see …

an inner ugliness that is hard to tolerate.

Another word for this is shame. Given to us when we were young but now our responsibility.

It takes courage to really look at what you don’t like about yourself, what needs improvement and where outward criticism is correct.

What you shouldn’t do is confuse where you are lacking with being defective. Two completely different things.

Most people don’t look within because they are afraid that they will see something inherently ugly that is a permanent, non-fixable part of themselves. We are all individuals with potential that is beyond what we can imagine for ourselves and that’s not pie-in-the-sky thinking. It’s fact.

Look within, feel the discomfort again and again, talk with people who are supportive and want the best for you, make what’s hidden come out and put it on display.

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”
― Coco Chanel
